The way the body works is very complicated. This is a masterpiece of ingenuity and mire humans are still trying to figure it out. There are many ailments and disease; we still do not know how to cure. But there are some simple things that can cause us great discomfort.

This complex system known as the human body has all manner of ligaments, muscles and bones. They are all connected in one way or another. So, if you cause any damage or strain to them, there are numerous other areas in your body that may be affected. Neck and shoulder pain is just one such case of something like this happening.

Now what causes neck and shoulder pain?

One of the supporting structures of the body is the shoulders and the neck. They are made up of veins, ligaments, bones, muscles, and tissues. All of them are intertwined. Continue reading to see some of the reasons why people are affected by neck and shoulder pain.

One of the first reasons is injury. This is the number one cause of neck and shoulder pain. A severe injury to either place can cause transference of pain to the other. How severe the pain is, will be dependent on how severe the injury is.

The muscles and the joints are able to move smoothly because of a cushioning sac called a Bursa. If there is any inflammation or swelling of the sac, then you get what is called Bursitis. You can get this in either the shoulder area or the neck area.

The rotator cuff is an integral part of the makeup of the shoulder. You can put your shoulder under great stress; whether from sports or intense physical activities and injure it. This will definitely cause neck and shoulder pain.
 
It is a fact that you do not need to have a physical injury to have neck and shoulder pain. You might actually have structural abnormalities in a number of areas. These may include the ligaments, bones, muscles and other areas; as in how they are positioned. For example if your neck and shoulders are positioned badly during sleep or they do not get sufficient support, then you run the risk of having neck and shoulder pain.

Did you know that there are tendons in the neck and shoulder?  They operate as a channel of connections for the bones and the muscles. If you overuse the muscles or excessively strain them, your tendons will be damaged as well as a result and you will get tendonitis from the inflammation.

A heart attack, a degenerative disease are linked with neck and shoulder pain as well.
