Joints, like any part of the body, may also become inflamed or become painful. There are many reasons why this condition happens but the most common one is due to a painful joint condition called arthritis. Arthritis is described as the inflammation of the joint which is associated with the degeneration of the connective tissue and bone. Arthritis pain is commonly felt on the hips and knees which are referred to as the weight-bearing joints of the body. When joints are affected by arthritis, there is redness, swelling, intense pain and inability to move the affected joint.

Aside from arthritis, joint pains may also be due to trauma brought about by physical exertion, direct physical trauma in the case of accidents or it can be due to autoimmune disorders and many other health conditions.

Reducing joint pain is one of the most common reasons why people seek medical consult. Here are some of the most popular ways to significantly reduce pain and possibly inflammation brought about by joint pains:

1. Over-the-counter medications for pain and inflammation are usually the first treatment most people with joint pain go for. There are also prescription medications for pain given by a medical professional for severe joint pains.

2. Hot compresses on the day you initially felt the joint pain may help reduce pain. Apply a hot water bottle or a warm compress on the site. You may use this treatment for as often as you like. You may also soak the affected joint in warm water or in the case of arthritic joints, take a warm bath and soak for several minutes to reduce the pain.

3. Rest and relax the affected joint. Do not move the joint for now and forgo any physical activity or fitness workouts.

4. Apply liniment or ointment to soothe and warm inflamed joints. Massage the ointment gently in small circular strokes for small joints and long gliding strokes for long arms and legs. You may repeat this treatment as much as you need to.

5. Wear elastic stockings or bandages to keep joints warm preventing pain from occurring. You may also sleep using a warm a blanket to keep joint warm reducing pain.

6. Consult a personal trainer or a physical therapist for the most appropriate joint exercise to bring back the strength of your joints, make your joints more movable and to reduce pain and inflammation.

7. Stick to a healthy weight to reduce pressure on joints, especially on the weight-bearing joints of the body. When your weight is ideal for your height and body built, you have a decreased risk in developing chronic degenerative illnesses as well.

8. Eat a balanced diet to make joints healthy. Eat more high quality protein like milk, fish eggs, lean meat, fish and poultry. Eat more fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and minerals also needed for bone and joint health.

9. Do not attempt to take herbal cures and wonder treatments for joint pains without consulting yoru doctor. These products may contain ingredients that can cause adverse side effects so it is best to consult your doctor first.
