Do you have pain shooting down your leg? Are you also experiencing numbness and tingling? These symptoms are often associated with sciatica, a medical condition often caused by low back pain. At one time, sciatica was referred to as the “witch's shot” and the “elf's arrow”.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a symptom of a spinal disorder, which occurs when the sciatic nerve (the longest and largest nerve in the body) becomes irritated, inflamed or compressed. The sciatic nerve, which is as wide as a thumb - runs from the spinal column near the pelvis and down each leg. Each sciatic nerve is made up of five smaller nerves which branch into the thigh, knee, calf, ankle and foot.

There are many symptoms associated with sciatica. These include pain, burning, tingling, numbness and muscle weakness, which may be felt in the hip, buttock, leg, calf and foot. Pain may be occasional or constant and last for a few hours, days, weeks or months. Sciatica pain can range from mild to severe.

What causes Sciatica?

A misaligned lower spine that pinches the root of the sciatic nerve may result in sciatica. There are several spinal disorders that can cause spinal nerve compression and sciatica:
  • Bulging or herniated disc
  • Lumbar spine stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis (one vertebra slipping forward over an adjacent vertebra)
  • Trauma (slip and fall, automobile injury, sports injury)
  • Piriformis Syndrome - The Piriformis muscle is located in the lower part of the spine - connecting to the thigh bone (helps with hip rotation). The sciatic nerve runs under this muscle, making it susceptible to injury.
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Constipation
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Being overweight
  • Poor posture while standing, sleeping and/or working
At Kessel Wellness Center NYC, we believe identifying the cause of sciatica is essential when seeking a cure for sciatica.
