Sciatica is a term for pain in the lower extremity which is a result of the irritation of the largest nerve in the entire body, the sciatic nerve. This nerve, when irritated, shoots a pain that can be felt from the lower back, radiating behind the thigh and goes down below the knee. Sciatica may also be referred as sciatic nerve pain.
Sciatica treatment may depend on the underlying cause of the sciatica. The severity of the pain is also considered when treatment is done. The most common cause of sciatica is herniated disc of the lumbar vertebrae. When the swollen disc herniates to the spinal cavity, it presses on the sciatic nerve causing inflammation, irritation and pain. The sciatic nerve may also be irritated due to a developing growth like a tumor, an adjacent bone, injury on the spine and possible internal bleedings that can irritate the sciatic nerve. Pregnancy is also a condition that can cause sciatica. The growing uterus may press on the sciatic nerve as the baby develops and grows.
Sciatica treatments are according to the different causes but most medical professionals agree that management of sciatica must also include the following:
Bed rest is thought to be the ideal sciatica treatment. Any medical treatment must be accompanied by bed rest to completely reduce the irritation of the sciatic nerve.
Muscle relaxants may be taken to reduce the irritation of the sciatic nerve but there are also natural treatments that can be done like meditation, relaxation and yoga. After yoru advised bed rest, gradual return to your daily activities must be done. Relaxation therapies and strategies may be done when you are able to manage your pain.
Pain is also better managed by using warm compresses, elastic bandages and by using relaxation techniques. However, if pain persists or when pain becomes more pronounced, a consult to your doctor must be done immediately.
As gradual return of activity returns, talk to a personal trainer or a physical therapist to choose the best exercise routine for the treatment of sciatica. You may also be taught ways to preserve your back and hips as you bend, twist and move to do basic activity each day.
Maintain a healthy weight appropriate for your height and body built. Excess fat can add pressure on the bones and muscles of the back, hips and legs which can further irritate the sciatic nerve.
A complete change in the way you move and lift things must be at hand. Use a cart, a trolley or any handy device to carry and lift heavy objects so you can minimize the use of your back and hips.
Eat healthier to ensure healthy bone, muscles and nerves, eat more high quality protein, fruits and vegetables. Take supplements every day.
Sometimes surgical option is the best sciatica treatment deemed by your doctor. Post surgical care must be kept in mind like wound care, preventing infection and physical therapy is at hand.
